Time Management Challenges

There are many challenges that I face that mess with my time management. Facebook, the phone and lack of motivation are just a few. Every time I come home and turn on my computer the first three things I do are check my Converse e-mail, regular e-mail and then my facebook. Sometimes I'll get occupied on one of them and end up spending a lot of time on it. Then, when I start working on some of my homework I realize that I have a lot of it and should not have spent so much time on facebook or e-mail. Sometimes when I am typing something on the computer I'll pull facebook up and chat with people while I work. This usually distracts me and I don't get as much work done as I should. Same goes for the phone. I'll think that I can talk on the phone and do work but I usually get distracted trying to hold the phone and don't get my work done when I should. Lack of motivation is the biggest problem I have. I'll look in my planner and know that I have things I need to do but I put them off because I'm not motivated to do any of it. These three things are definitely things that I need to work on and fix for me to be successful in college.

  1. Well, you're in good company! The Book of Faces sucks us all in for far too many minutes in a day. So take charge of those minutes. The great thing about email and FB is that they don't magically evaporate if you let them sit by themselves for an hour. You don't even need to turn on your computer to do, say, your theory homework! So do, say, the first page of theory homework FIRST, and then reward yourself with five minutes of FB. And then TURN IT BACK OFF and get back to the work. Get an actual timer with a beeper if you need to. Try it for a few days--you'll be amazed how much more time your have.

  2. I understand how hard it is to find motivation to do all of your work. Usually I am just too exhausted to even want to pick up a pencil. You just have to find someway to make yourself do it. I always like to reward myself. I'll say, "Joy, if you finish this page of theory, I'll buy you ice cream." And what do you know, it works! Also the cell phone issue. I will very easily become distracted by a text message and will drop whatever i am doing to answer it. BAD HABIT! I've since learned to turn it on silent, and can use checking my text messages as a reward!

  3. I have some of the same problems. I find myself getting on facebook to check my messages, then an hour later realize that I'm STILL on facebook. My only suggestion is to do your homework before getting online. I too lack motivation to get my work done sometimes, especially if it's something I struggle with. I try to do the difficult or boring stuff first, then you'll be able to breeze through the rest of it. My suggestion for the cell phone problem is to maybe turn off your phone while you're working on an assignment, then check your messages when you're done. I hope these suggestions are helpful. Good luck!
